In early 1998, I worked in an orchard in Hawke's Bay, on the East Coast of the North Island in New Zealand. This place is a fruit paradise, so I was fully prepared to be at one with the world, when the truth is I hated the manual labour. What was more disturbing, though, was the strange undercurrent of foreboding that existed among the workers. Many of the workers were religious, and I got the feeling that I was being judged as a sinner simply for not being an out and out Christian.
