This is the song I wrote and performed at the 2012 Project Born show in Wellington. It tells the story of the harrowing neonatal journey from a father's perspective, when he is unable to get near his newborn child.
The show was an emotional journey for all involved, and I would like to acknowledge the sterling work of my backing vocalists Aotea Cornelius, Felicity Wait, and Lisa Tagaloa. And whilst they don't feature on this recording, Tristan Carter, Charley Davenport, Hannah Fraser and Kate Uhe made a up a magnificent string quartet.
I would also like to thank Tamihana Paurini for choreographing a dance that moved the audience to tears night after night.
Please download and enjoy it, and please spread the word.
lyrics
When I left you there it was all I could do,
I know nothing's fair, not on me, not on you,
But what you don't know
Is that I won't go.
I hope it's okay if I imagine your smile.
When I walk away, you know it's just for a while,
But what you don't see
Is that it cuts me.
What you don't know
Is that I won't go.
What you don't feel
Is that it real.
The coffee in my cup makes it so hard to leave
Don't want to get up, to want to believe
That you don't know
That I won't go.
Because a life under lights, is a life left on hold
Infinite nights and I've got cracks in my soul
And you don't know
That I won't go.
And what you don't see
Is that it cuts me.
And what you don't feel
Is that it is real.
And what you don't know
Is that my back's bowed
And what you don't see
Is that is me
Bright lights burn on behind closed eyes.
Flat whites become slate grey skies
But I will bring you home.
One day I will bring you home.
You won't see me, please believe me.
I won't go away.
